“The Duds make music that calls, answers and echoes each other’s experiences of longing, love, regret and release. They offer heartfelt lyrics borne on a lyrical blend of folk, pop, and dance influences.”
St. John’s, NL pop duo Melanie O’Brien and Philip Goodridge have been performing, touring, writing and recording music together for over ten years. They released their debut album, These Words I Can’t Forget in 2020 and they have completed two more recording projects since; a single titled, Til We Run as well as four original holiday songs as part of a larger collection of seasonal music. The next thing lighting a creative spark for the duo are two pop originals that define their sound more specifically than ever before and interestingly, these songs come as a set. Written just days apart, these two belong together. The songs, Like This and Every Single Time represent the current evolution of this local duo. The MusicNL nominated pair have created music that is accessible, relatable, and insightful. These two summer singles offer that up to listeners in a fresh and focused way.
The two songs will be released as an A-Side, B-Side double feature throw back. The A-side tune is clearly Like This with the beat starting from the first second; leading low verse tones to a quickly exploding chorus that immediately coincides with the characters plan to remain casual all the while it’s clear there’s much more about to happen in this relationship. Then the bonus B-side track Every Single Time’s melancholy piano intro takes us to a different place; longing for real love but consistently missing the mark. The songs share dualing yet equally complex and nuanced aspects of romantic love. A perfect pairing; dealing with both the beginning and the end of romantic love and the breadth of circumstances, emotions, and complications in between. The songs have been chosen as a summer release to play with the romance of the season, be it a wedding or a surprise fling, reminiscent or in the moment.
